Privacy Policy
wandr is a travel app for ranking the places you've been, mapping your travels, and following friends. This policy explains what we collect, why, and the choices you have.
Information you give us
Account details: your email address, display name, username, and (optionally) a profile photo, bio, home location, and links to your other profiles or website. Your content: the places you log (name, location/coordinates, your 0–10 score, notes, tags, dates) and any photos you add. Social activity: who you follow, and the footprints (likes) and notes (comments) you leave.
Information collected automatically
When you grant permission, we use your device location to center the map and tag places you pin. wandr also offers an optional “nearby places” feature that, only if you turn it on and grant “Always” location access, monitors your location in the background so it can remind you when you are near a place on your list. It is off by default, you can turn it off at any time in the app, and you can revoke the permission in your device settings. If you enable notifications, we store a push token for your device so we can send follow/footprint/note alerts. Photos you add may contain location data in their metadata; we read it to place the pin and strip it from the copy we store. Videos are stored as recorded and may retain embedded capture information, such as the time and place they were filmed. We also process basic technical data needed to operate the app (e.g. crash and error signals) and, if you buy a membership or leave a tip, your purchase status.
How we use your information
To provide the core features — your map, ranked lists, profile, and the friends feed; to deliver notifications you've opted into; to keep the service safe (see Content moderation); and to operate, maintain, and improve the app. We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for third-party advertising. wandr does not track you across other companies' apps or websites and does not respond to browser Do Not Track signals, which do not apply to the app. Where the law requires a legal basis for processing, we rely on performance of our contract with you (providing the app), your consent for optional features (like background location and notifications, which you can withdraw at any time), and our legitimate interests in keeping the service safe and working.
Photos and content moderation
Photos you add are uploaded to our cloud storage so they can appear on your map and, if you post publicly, in friends' feeds. To keep wandr safe and to meet app-store requirements, every uploaded image is automatically screened for explicit content, and content that violates our rules may be removed. You can also report or block other users from within the app.
Sharing and service providers
Your public profile and the places you choose to post are visible to other signed-in users. We share data with service providers that run the app on our behalf: Google Firebase and Google Cloud (authentication, database, file storage, and content screening), Mapbox and Komoot/Photon (maps and place search), Wikimedia and Unsplash (article text and images for the Explore feed), Apple and Google (sign-in, if you use them), Expo (push notification delivery), Sentry (crash and error reporting), Google Analytics for Firebase (aggregate usage analytics), and RevenueCat (membership and tip purchase status, linked to your account id). These providers process data under their own terms and only to provide their service to us. wandr is operated from the United States and our service providers store data on servers in the United States and other countries; by using the app you understand your information is processed there, where privacy laws may differ from those of your country.
Usage analytics
We measure how the app is used so we can tell which parts work and which are broken — for example how many people finish setting up their map, and where they stop. This is collected by Google Analytics for Firebase and covers events like opening the app, adding a place, and viewing the membership screen, together with device and country information. It is aggregate: we do not attach your name, email, handle, or the coordinates of your places to it, and we do not use it for advertising or sell it. You can turn off analytics sharing on iOS in Settings › Privacy & Security › Analytics & Improvements, and on Android in your device's usage-data settings.
Data retention and deletion
We keep your information for as long as your account is active. You can delete your account at any time from the in-app Profile screen; doing so removes your profile, your places, your photos and videos, and the follow connections pointing to you. Some records may persist briefly in backups before being purged. We retain content-safety records (abuse reports and moderation logs) after account deletion to keep the service safe and meet legal obligations, and purchase records are retained by Apple, Google, and RevenueCat under their own policies.
Children
wandr is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country), and we do not knowingly collect their information. If you believe a child has provided us data, contact us and we will delete it.
Security
We use industry-standard measures — including authenticated, owner-scoped access rules — to protect your data. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, but we work to safeguard your information.
Your choices and rights
You can edit your profile, change your privacy-relevant settings, revoke location or notification permissions in your device settings, and delete your account at any time. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights to access, correct, delete, or receive a copy of your data; contact us to exercise them.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the app evolves. We'll update the date above and, for material changes, provide a more prominent notice.
